The Roland TR-626 is a drum machine that was released in 1987 as a successor to the TR-505. It's part of Roland's classic line of rhythm machines and is known for its versatile sound capabilities and extensive features. Here's an overview of the Roland TR-626:

  1. Sound Generation: The TR-626 features PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) samples for its drum sounds, a departure from the analog synthesis used in earlier models like the TR-808. This allowed for a wider range of drum sounds, including realistic acoustic drums and percussion.

  2. Drum Sounds: The TR-626 includes a variety of drum and percussion sounds, including kick, snare, hi-hats (open and closed), toms, cymbals, handclaps, and more. It offers a total of 30 individual drum sounds.

  3. Sequencing: Like its predecessors, the TR-626 includes a built-in step sequencer for programming patterns. Users can create patterns of up to 96 steps in length, with individual control over each drum sound's timing, velocity, and panning.

  4. Memory: The TR-626 offers extensive memory storage for patterns and songs. It includes 48 user patterns and 8 user songs, providing ample space for storing and arranging musical ideas.

  5. Interface: The TR-626 features a straightforward interface with buttons and sliders for programming patterns, adjusting tempo, and accessing various functions. It also includes a backlit LCD screen for easy navigation and parameter adjustment.

  6. MIDI Connectivity: The TR-626 includes MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) connectivity, allowing it to sync with other MIDI-compatible devices such as sequencers, synthesizers, and computers. This enables more advanced sequencing and integration into larger studio setups.

  7. Effects: The TR-626 includes basic onboard effects such as reverb and delay, which can be applied to individual drum sounds or the overall mix. These effects can add depth and ambiance to the drum patterns.

  8. Use in Music Production: While the TR-626 may not have achieved the same level of iconic status as the TR-808 or TR-909, it has been widely used in various music genres, including pop, electronic, and dance music. Its versatile sound palette and intuitive interface make it a popular choice for both beginners and experienced producers alike.
